Tip of the Week: How to Use Tabs in Your Browser
Chances are you use your Internet browser more than any other tool on your computer, so why not make the most of it? Today, we’re focusing on how you can stay organized and productive with your web browser. We’ll cover all you need to know about tabs, including best practices and shortcuts that are sure to see a lot of use.
Group Tabs
If you look at your tabs, you might notice that many of them are interconnected and related somehow depending on the task. Tab Grouping lets you bundle them together to stay organized. Here’s how you can do it using Google Chrome:
- Right-click an existing tab and select Add tab to new group. You also have the option to rename the group (giving you context into its contents) and change its color for visibility.
- Add tabs by either dragging and dropping them into the proper group or right-clicking the tab, selecting Add tab to group, and choosing the correct one.
- Once these groups are created, you can collapse them into a much smaller tab on your tab bar. Clicking them will expand them again.
Pin Tabs
If you visit the same websites day-in and day-out, you can pin them to make them easily accessible. Here’s how you can pin your tabs so they’re easier to find and they can take up less space:
- Right-click the tab and select Pin tab.
- If you ever need to unpin the tab, right-click it and select Unpin tab.
Move Tabs to Different Browser Windows
You can arrange your tabs in the browser window to keep them categorized by task or project. How you do it is up to you, so just pick whatever system you’re comfortable with. Here’s how you do it:
- Click and drag the tab away from the current window, either allowing it to become a new window or adding it to another browser instance.
- Right-clicking a tab offers the ability to move it to a new or existing window. When selecting the latter, you’ll see a list of available options.
Copy Tabs
If you need two tabs open for the same page, like for the same document, you can open them at the same time. All you have to do to open two copies of the same tab is use this trick:
- Simply right-click the tab and select Duplicate tab.
Batch Close Your Tabs
Once you’re done with a task, you’ll want to close out of the various tabs you used to complete it. You can close out of a bunch of tabs all at once using the following method:
- If you only need one of your tabs to stay open, you can right-click on it and select Close other tabs.
- You can also select Close tabs to the right.
